Contest Winners!
All of the judges agreed that picking winners from this year's offerings was the
hardest task we've ever faced. 2003's project was
#39042 Medium Quickbuild™ Display Box Kit. Each of the 100+ entries demonstrated
great creativity and a real commitment to this hobby of ours. The challenge to "Think
outside of the Box" inspired so much originality and artistry that we fell into
heated debate to decide upon the selected few...
Grand Prize: $1000 Gift Certificate
Hank's Bait Shop
Margaret H. Smith
Columbus, MS
To those who have been following the Creatin' Contest in recent years, it may appear
that the judges have an unnatural attraction to Bait Shops.
In this case, despite the theme, our judges agreed on the superior craftsmanship
of the weathered siding and pier, the talent shown in Margaret's original watercolor
background and the overwhelming completeness of every detail in this project.
It's whimsical sense of humor (Margaret points out that Ernie came for a visit in
his red truck!) and, finally, the superior quality of the photography were the deciding
factors.
First Place: $500 Gift Certificate
An Egyptian Temple
Bettee Miller
Sequim, WA
The awesome hand painted originality and craftsmanship of this project brought it
to the head of the pack in the first round of judging. Bettee applied her experience
as an archeologist, and the period detail is authentic and precise. She told us
the hieroglyphs at the top of the pyramid translate to: "The Temple is dedicated
to the great queens and pharaohs of ancient Egypt, without whom history would not
be as interesting, fascinating and mysterious as it is today." Also, the rocks next
to the palm trees are actually from the Giza Pyramid in Egypt.
Second Place: $300 Gift Certificate
Bon-Val Bridal Boutique
Bonnie McCormick and Val McCormick
Phillipsburg, NJ
A bridal boutique cooked up into a three-tiered wedding cake was too delicious to
resist. This project earned high marks for originality and "took the cake" for the
amazing completeness of its details. Inside, you will find everything from bridesmaids'
dresses hanging in the fitting room to numerous shopping bags and hat boxes in the
shop area--all with custom Bon-Val Bridal logos. Bonnie and her mother, Val, executed
every imaginable finishing touch!
Third Place: $200 Gift Certificate
Nursery Rhyme Theatre
Monika Liebenow
Shelton, WA
The charming originality and precise craftsmanship of this project placed it ahead
of more complex Honorable Mention projects. A child-like sense of wonder should
always be a part of a miniaturist's artistry. The stage, as shown, has two scenes:
"Into the Woods" and "At Grandma's House." Because nothing is permanently attached,
Monika can stage other plays to her heart's content.
Ernie was so impressed by this youngster's entry that we had to give it a special
"spot" in the winners section!
