Contest Winners
The 7th Annual Creatin' Contest was particularly difficult to judge because there
were so many outstanding projects - all unique, original and amazing in their detail.
Our panel of judges narrowed the field by looking for excellence in concept, detailing,
completeness and artistry. Take a look at their choices, and see if you agree that
these submissions are among the best ever! We truly appreciate the time and effort
each of you dedicated to your 2-Story Duplex Kit project. You made the judges' job
very challenging!
Pouring
over the Creatin' Contest entries is something all of us here at HBS look forward
to each year. Thanks to every one of you who participated. Our panel of judges was
made up of expert miniaturists and artists who deliberated over the entries for
days, stating that you made their job way too difficult.
Grand Prize $1,000 HBS Gift Certificate Palm Beach House
Charles T. Stevenson, New York, NYThe architectural beauty of this project and the obvious hard work that
it required astounded us. In particular, the wraparound exterior stairs and the
twisting interior stairwell are impressive. Just imagine painting and positioning
all those balusters and spindles! And the sheer elegance of the exterior is only
surpassed by the refined decor of the interior. Charles told us that he worked for
over six months to refine his project and has been collecting the inside furnishings
for years. Peeking into these rooms is like looking into the home of one of the
"rich and famous."
First Place
$500 HBS Gift Certificate
Bubba's Bait
Judy Archer, Normal, IL
We love the campy charm of this
project, and couldn't fail to notice all the wonderful finishing touches. From the
dock, with its row of outboard motors, to the shop's interior, with its precisely
placed items, Judy's project is completely realized. The skill of her detailing
and the fish slicing through the building's corner are artisan-level work. The clear,
well-lit photographs she sent allowed us to fully appreciate her effort.
Second Place
$300 HBS Gift Certificate
Diagon Alley
Jean Bloom & Michael Boarman, Indianapolis, IN
Jean and Michael created an entire
street that replicates the shopping district for wizards and witches from the Harry
Potter books by J.K. Rowling. It was the humorous delight of this Magical Menagerie
shop that initially attracted us, but the enchanting hand painted exterior won us
over. They put months of hard work into creating a project that provokes childlike
wonder and invites us all to be "young at heart."
Third Place
$200 HBS Gift Certificate
Oriental Emporium & Tea Garden
Carol A. Goin, New Albany, IN
This colorful shop is beautifully
detailed inside and out, but it was the pagoda that landed it on the winner's list.
(Carol painstakingly built it from her own design.) One can imagine browsing through
the many wonderful items in the shop and then taking a rest in the serene pagoda
garden. It would seem that creating a winning project involves making a place others
want to go into ... and stay a while.
