If you are new to miniatures and don’t know what the different scales are, much less what scale you are looking for, we are here to help! It is really very simple once you know the basics. Also, on miniatures.com, we tell you the scale of every single item, and we also give you measurements for just about everything. Most importantly, if you ever need help, we are just an email or phone call away.
Now, to the basics: 1/12 scale is generally considered the most common dollhouse scale, and that’s what the majority of our dollhouses, furniture and accessories are. 1/12 scale, also called 1” scale, simply means that something that is 12” in full-scale is 1” in 1/12 scale. For example, if a real-life dog is 2’ high (24”) and being replicated in 1/12 scale, the pooch would be 2” high. Now, keep in mind that in real life (sticking with the dog example), there is a lot of variation in sizes. Even within a dog breed, some dogs are bigger than others. One Border Collie-mix may be right at 24” high, while his brother is closer to 28” high. So when items are scaled, there is some subjectivity in size. For that reason, we encourage you always to check the measurement of each item you are looking at, no matter the scale, to make sure the size is right for your scene.
1/24 scale, 1/48 scale and 1/144 scale are other scales we carry that are smaller than 1/12 scale. These scales are often chosen if space is at a premium, or by people that are just fascinated at how much detail can be captured in something so small! Back to the dog example, in 1/24 scale, the Border Collie-mix would be just 1” high; in 1/48 scale, he would be ½….see how simple this is?
Playscale is 1/6 scale. It is called Playscale because it is sized to accommodate 8” high fashion dolls and their furniture and accessories. Our Playscale items are meant for those who wish to create a family heirloom, meaning they are the same collector-quality as our other items—not the plastic versions sold in toy stores.
Life-size items are items that not miniatures. You will find tools here that may come in handy as you craft your mini scenes, as well as an occasional carefully-chosen gift item.
